Principal's Update
Use of Mobile Phones at School from Term 4
The Department of Education has released its Mobile Phones in Schools Policy which all schools must implement from the beginning of Term 4, 2023.
Following extensive consultation with key stakeholders, including students, parents and staff, Hawkesbury High School will implement the phones off and away option.
From the beginning of Term 4, students will not be allowed to use their mobile phones at school, including during recess and lunch and during school excursions. Students will be permitted to turn on their phones at the end of the school day and when making payments at the front office or the canteen. In some circumstances, teachers may give students permission to use mobile phones for learning activities.
There will also be provisions for exemptions, upon application to the Principal, for students who need to use their phones for health and wellbeing outcomes, or as part of reasonable adjustments to enable students with specific needs to participate in education on the same basis as other students.
The school’s Mobile Devices Policy, the school’s Management Procedures for the Use of Mobile Phones, and the Mobile Phone Exemption Form is available on the school’s website.
I encourage all parents to familiarise themselves with the policy and procedures prior to the beginning of Term 4. Also, if you believe that your child qualifies for an exemption, I would encourage you to apply for an exemption in time for the beginning of Term 4.
The final management procedures for the use of mobile phones are given below. Authorised use of a mobile phone refers to any use for which a student is given explicit permission by a teacher at the school, including holders of a Phone License. Unauthorised use of a mobile phone includes any use of a mobile phone without permission, including having a mobile phone in sight, regardless of whether the phone is being actively used by a student.
General Management Procedures
- Mobile phones must be turned off and placed out of sight during school hours, including during breaks and excursions. Mobile phones must be turned off as soon as students arrive on school grounds.
- Students may use mobile phones to make front office payments and school canteen payments in the canteen line only. Phones must be turned off as soon as the canteen payment is made.
- Year 12 students may use their mobile phones in the Senior Study.
- Mobile phones may be turned on after the last bell sounds at the end of the school day.
- If an exemption is granted by the Principal, a mobile phone may be used at school for learning adjustments that are part of a learning plan and for health and wellbeing reasons.
- Parents or carers can apply for an exemption directly to the Principal. Supporting evidence must be supplied with any applications for an exemption.
- Students with an approved exemption will be issued with a Phone License. A mobile phone may only be used in places and for purpose/s identified in the Phone License.
Management Procedures for Unauthorised use of Mobile Phones
- Students who are sighted with a mobile phone at school, used in an unauthorised manner, including in the playground, will be told that their phone will be confiscated. A head teacher, deputy principal, or the Principal will be notified and the mobile phone will then be confiscated for the duration of the school day.
- If a student’s mobile phone is confiscated on repeated occasions, the phone may be kept at school until a parent or carer collects the phone. The phone will not be returned directly to the student after repeated unauthorised.
- If a student refuses to hand over the phone after unauthorised use, the student will be formally cautioned and parents/carers will be informed.
- If a student refuses to hand over their mobile phone after being formally cautioned for repeated unauthorised use, the student may be suspended from school.
- As an alternative to suspending a student for repeated refusal to hand over a phone for unauthorised use, a student’s phone may be suspended from school at the discretion of the Principal. This will require parents to ensure that their child does not bring a mobile phone to school for the duration of the phone suspension.
I am excited to make our school a mobile phone-free space to improve learning and engagement and to make sure that you can always contact your child in case of an emergency.

7C 2024 Application
The application forms for 7C 2024 have been provided to our partner primary schools. The form is also available to view on the HHS website.
Applications are due by 3 November 2023.
The application process for 8C, 9S and 10S 2024 will be explained to students and parents at the start of Term 4.
Uniform
I would like to thank parents and students for maintaining the school’s STAR values by wearing the correct school uniform. Correct uniform is an important safety consideration that allows the school to manage risks around unauthorised people on the school grounds.
The following are important reminders of the HHS school uniform procedures:
- The striped school jacket, school commemorative hoodie or school jumper (maroon) with the school emblem.
- The HHS track pants are the only track pants allowed as school uniform.
- A plain navy or black crew neck sweatshirt may be worn under the school uniform jacket if an extra warm layer is needed.
- Non HHS hooded tops (hoodies), a top under a HHS polo shirt, leggings and non-HHS sport shorts are non-uniform items and cannot be worn to school.
- If a student is out of uniform, they will be provided with appropriate clothing and be expected to change.
- Students who are out of uniform and without a note from parents, will be issued a recess detention.
If you have any queries about uniform or require assistance, please contact the school on 4579 6800.

Year 12 2023
Congratulations to Year 12 on your wonderful achievement. Our students have worked hard to successfully complete all their coursework, assessments and exams to meet the outcomes of their courses. Year 12 have been role models at HHS, especially our outstanding leadership team: Lorretta Sultana, Branden Charles, Charlotte Walkom, Jack Catania, Nana Pearson, Belle Schleter and Luke Howard.
The HSC Exams begin on the 11th of October. Year 12 should use the study time to summarise coursework into WALU paragraphs, complete past papers, practise timed responses and seek feedback from their teachers. Past papers and online multiple-choice practice questions can be found on the NESA website below:

The Wellness Garden
The Wellness garden is underway and students have been planning which plants suit the space and the planting arrangement that works with the size they will grow. Students will be planting them out soon and creating a management plan to nurture and enable these plants to grow and thrive. This program is to build confidence and teamwork with selected students at our school.

Advice for Parents on Head Lice
The warmer weather has seen an increase in head lice. There have been a number of cases at school. Please check your child's hair and commence treatment if there are any signs of head lice.
